Socks
People buy expensive bags with cushioned interior or even sponges cut around the shape of the gear to protect them from accidental impact.
For me, I am not much of a dropping stuff on the ground guy and my gears aren't that expensive that I need to buy an expensive and bulky bag to carry them.
What I worry the most, though, is scratches on the body of the gears, or worse on the lenses. After weeks of search for the perfect cheap, lightweight container of my gears, I ended up with a pair of socks I was about to throw away.
If may not be able to protect my gears from a fall, but it's good enough for resisting scratches.
